These guns were first hand made by
John Gillespie in what is now Transylvania County.
The fascinating history of these
long guns and pictures can be found in Jim Bob Tinsley's popular book, The
Land of Waterfalls, Transylvania County, North Carolina.
Jim Bob and Dottie purchased one of
the Gillespie Long Guns, made by Phillip Gillespie, from Dave Holliday in 1984.
This gun was called "Old Ellen". It dates back to the mid 1800's.
Old Ellen" is on exhibit in the
museum.
